COLOUR INFLUENCE IN SCENES 🎨

Inside Out Craft | Silhouette Craft for Kids | Inside out emotions, Inside out poster, Inside out characters

Making previous shorts I never considered the impact a single colour could give to an overall scene. In this practice after exploring the correlation with specific colours and moods . I decided to assign colours to scenes.

I then decided to draw out the scenes with its colour, working out transitions and lighting. The colour/mood helped me figure out the diegetic sound in the scenes

Finally I created hand painted backgrounds using a range of its assigned colour and some colour bleeds of other colours

CREATING CHARACTERS 🎭

I enjoyed creating Characters. Once I finalised my script and storyboard I decided to use this as a premise to study postures and emotions expected by my characters.

Rough story board

As a point of reference I decided to use myself as a key study for turnaround poses. I dressed up as the protagonist of my short film and explored simple shapes on myself.

The result was very fun although I intend for the character to be younger and smaller. Using myself helped me to understand flows in hair and garments and movement within the geometry of a shape.

For more convincing acting I decided to take direct reference expressions from Nollywood films for my main characters.

The Madam

The same method was used to create sub characters.

TERRY GILLINGHAM ✂

The work of Terry Gillingham inspired my visual outcome to a great extent. His whimsical method of overlaying cut outs from drawings and photography to create engaging animated films. He told fun fast quick stories using cut outs mainly from photographs and magazine. He explained his method as achieving maximum effect from minimum work. I did playful visual testers to see if i could adapt his cut out method in my practice.

BACKGROUND CHANGE- The Village ☀

Initially I decided to physically build my backgrounds with paint and cardboard...

                                  fig 1

The rough model shown in (fig 2) was hand painted with acrylic backdrops.
In this test the smaller boxes were used as houses. I arranged the model and took still images for background testers. I began to realise that I couldn't get the ideal lighting and camera depth, while in lockdown.

                                 fig 2

In creating the physical model the proportion were to large for the distance of the camera. I needed to create precise backdrops and smaller models. I then created a rough 3D model on sketch up (fig 3) of the set to guide me with scale.

I used images from the 3D model and created photo montages on photoshop to test if that would be a unique storytelling background. I wasn't happy with the results.  (fig 4)

I then decided to return to painting the backgrounds by hand using the model as a guide for proportion and positioning. Then i drew 2d characters over the hand drawing with procreate.

Time passing

The film spans over a period of about a year, however seeing that its only a 2 minute film I struggled with making the time passing. My firs...
